Visions of Cape Wickham at UTAS Cradle Coast Campus
Visions of island life are often romantic and unrealistic, but a new exhibition at Cradle Coast Campus provides an islanders view of the real colour and beauty of King Island.
Cape Wickham and all its Glory showcases nine works of long term King Island resident Bridget Levy. Each work depicts the land and seascapes surrounding the hub of this remote island community - the port, the boats and the lighthouse.
King Island culture runs deep in Bridget Levy's family history. Her ancestors arrived on King Island as seafarers and free settlers to take up land in 1889. Since then her family have worked the land and sea and it is this love of the Island that comes through in her work.
"I am continually fascinated by this island - the tremendous courage, the loneliness, the pathos, the coastal hills, the sea, the amazing history and the pride. I try to do justice to the island and my family through my paintings. My present paintings are my interpretation of the Wickham - the lonely isolation of the sea" says Ms Levy.
Bridget studied Painting at Swinburne Art School, receiving her Diploma of Painting with Honours. Since 1960 Bridget has been exhibiting and selling consistently on King Island at the Boathouse and the King Island Cultural Centre. Cape Wickham landscape is the inspiration behind this thematic exhibition which was part of the King Island Cultural Centre's artistic program for 2011 curated by Sally Marsden and the Wickham Lighthouse 150th celebrations.
As part of its Tasmaniantour, Cape Wickham and all its Glory, will be exhibited at the Atrium Gallery, at the University of Tasmania, Cradle Coast Campus, 16-20 Mooreville Road, Burnie from Thursday 12th July through till Wednesday 8th August.
