On behalf of the Children's Book Council of Australia's Tasmanian Branch and the Faculty of Education, children’s authors and science professionals, Claire Saxby and Catriona Hoy will present, 'Linking Literacy and Science for Primary School Children – an abbreviated version”.

At this free public event at the University of Tasmania, Claire and Catriona will illustrate how picture books can be used as a starting point in enquiry learning in science. The session has been developed using the draft National Curriculum as a guide.

Catriona Hoy is a children's author and secondary science teacher. She has written extensively for children’s educational magazines and her books have been published both in Australia and overseas. Catriona’s books have curriculum applications for both primary and pre-school children. Her first picture book, My Grandad Marches on Anzac Day (Lothian), has become an iconic Australian classic and is widely used in primary schools throughout Australia. Catriona has been listed twice on the CBCA notables list for The Music Tree (Lothian) 2007 and Puggle (Working Title Press) 2011. Claire Saxby writes fiction, nonfiction and poetry for children. She has more than 35 books in print with more in production. Her poetry appears in magazines, anthologies, on train walls and in museum resources. Claire’s most recent picture books are SCBWI Crystal Kite Award winner There Was an Old Sailor, a nautical take on an old rhyme, illustrated by Cassandra Allen (Walker Books), and Carrum Sailing Club, a visit to the beach, illustrated by Christina Booth (Windy Hollow Books). Other titles include Sheep, Goat and the Creaking Gate illustrated by Judith Rossell (WHB) and Snow Play a Go Girls chapter book (HGE).
