The Second Year School of Visual and Performaning Arts Students Present
Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Robert Lewis
Audiences will be taken on a journey of love, mischief and deceit when William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream comes to three exciting locations at The Inveresk Precinct. This much loved comedy will be performed by the UTAS Second Year students at the Annexe Theatre, in a one-week season from the 9th - 12th May.
From the Director Robert Lewis:
“Our SVPA Theatre Students are performing one of Shakespeare's most celebrated plays. The challenge for contemporary performers is to balance the classical elements of the work (textual structure, language) with contemporary elements (style, technical aspects, aesthetics). As soon as the lights go up on the stage, you will become immersed in an immediate experience to not only relate to in an intellectual sense, but also connect to on an emotional level.
Exploring the contemporary and even futuristic interpretation with the age-old themes of love, magic and dreams, this years staging of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream will entice and challenge audiences as it brings into the modern world a story of opposites: the beautiful and the grotesque, earthy and magical, reality and fantasy. The play also explores complex and rich human relationships. Students are exploring themselves in time and space, reflecting on their interaction and expectations of society and how both their characters and themselves are bound within the expectations and restraints of culture and social order.”
