A tribute exhibition honouring Dr Peter Byers AM.  Dr Byers, with his wife Paddy, generously donated 34 contemporary art works to the University Fine Art Collection over a period of some 38 years (1984 – 2012).

He passed away in June.

UTAS School of Art Emeritus Professor Geoff Parr said of Dr Byers, “his purchase of art was not an isolated pursuit, as it grew out of his active promotion of Tasmanian arts culture.”

These gifts to the University acknowledge a keen eye, and a commitment to, Tasmanian art and artists in particular.

Among his many achievements, Dr Byers was responsible for the redevelopment of the former IXL Jam Factory in Hunter Street, for the UTAS School of Art, a national prize-winning project and the Conservatorium of Music in the old ABC buidling in Sandy Bay Road.

The impact of his passion goes further than the works you will see in this exhibition, as he was responsible for many more of the university’s major artworks through the scheme he introduced to purchase art for new buildings.
