What are the challenges and directions for engaging men in the human services? In recent years, men have become more of a focus of concern of government at both the policy and service delivery levels in relation to men's violence against women and other men, men's health, fathering issues, experiences of divorce and separation, suicide and depression, among other issues. However, the theoretical frames used for engaging men are usually informed either explicitly or unconsciously by socio-biological or sex role approaches. This seminar will explore the limitations of these approaches for understanding men and masculinity and outline the contribution of critical masculinity studies to working with men in the human services. Such a theoretical foundation acknowledges the multiplicity of masculinities, locates men within social divisions and recognises how masculinity is socially constructed, institutionalised and enacted by men within patriarchal gender regimes.

Bob Pease is Professor of Social Work at the University of Tasmania. He has published extensively on masculinity studies and profeminist practice with men and has been actively engaged in campaigns against men's violence.

The InFocus Seminar Series is a new initiative that has been developed to promote engagement between UTAS researchers and the wider community. Our seminars will feature both academic perspectives on issues of community concern and presentations by industry, government and community sector professionals. We anticipate that that InFocus events will be held on a monthly basis at the IMAS Building in Salamanca.
