Benjamin Duckworth is a Principal, Executive Group Member and Head of Design at HASSELL. He is responsible for the process and quality of design at HASSELL. Ben has led the design of significant national and international projects in a wide range of sectors and contexts. His projects span single spaces to master plans for 20,000 people and typologies ranging from residential, to sporting, commercial, cultural and educational. To all of these projects he has brought an interest in connecting people.

Ben graduated from UTAS in 1997 and worked for Robert Morris-Nunn and Assoc in Hobart, before moving to Sydney to work for Innovarchi, Renzo Piano’s Australian partners of the Aurora Place Building in the Sydney CBD. In 2003, Ben won the RAIA Polyfloor Traveling Scholarship, and subsequently moved to Europe.

Prior to HASSELL was the Project Director at Herzog & de Meuron for projects including the New Tate Modern, The Blavatnik School of Government, Kolkata Museum of Modern Art and the 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. At HASSELL Ben has led projects such as The Point, 97 Franklin Street, Melbourne Park Administration Building and Flinders Street Station International Design Competition. Ben has delivered lectures in universities across Australia and overseas. He has also taught a Master Design Studio at The University of Melbourne.

Built, may be built, won’t be built? Ben will discuss the development of design ideas and what is learnt through various design process, reflecting on his experience at Herzog de Meuron and HASSELL.
