Monet didn’t sign his paintings in the same way throughout his life. There is an interesting correspondence between changes in his approach to his signature and changes in his depiction of shadows. What is the nature of this connection? What if we tried thinking of Monet’s signature itself as a kind of shadow, and the shadows themselves as some kind of signature?
In his second lecture for the State Cinema’s EXHIBITION ON SCREEN series, Chris Arneaud-Clarke from the Tasmanian College of the Arts, University of Tasmania, will explore this possibility in relation to the many repetitions in Monet’s work. The lecture follows the opening screening of I, Claude Monet from award-winning director Phil Grabsky.
