Reflecting on 25 years of practice which began in Tasmania, Stephen will navigate key islands of work marking milestones in his practice. This presentation will celebrate and showcase projects that have crossed from theatre and exhibition design; to communications and brand design; and more recent curatorial practice.

In a world anxious with pressures, challenges and wicked problems, our next generation of designers have been encumbered with new responsibilities in the way they design and think. He will give insights into his current endeavour to place his own practice within a larger context of designers as agents of change, working at a range of scales and in various modalities. He will consider his own ongoing connection with making, acting as a balm to those anxieties.

Stephen Goddard trained at the University of Tasmania's Centre for the Arts in Hunter Street majoring in Graphic Design and Photography. His early career included numerous projects as a theatre designer as well as teaching within the Graphic Design department at UTAS.

Marking 25 years in independent practice this year, Stephen has been based in Sydney for most of that time and has worked as a communications, publication and exhibition designer for many of the country's most significant institutions – including Sydney Festival, Biennale of Sydney, JamFactory, Object/Australian Design Centre, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Australian Museum to name a few. Stephen has won many awards for publication design, working with artists and galleries over his entire career. He was brand and book designer for last year's Australian Exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale – The Pool: Architecture, Culture and Identity in Australia. He has been the book designer and exhibition lead designer for WOOD: art design architecture, GLASS: art design architecture and STEEL: art design architecture for JamFactory and Lola Greeno: Cultural Jewels for Object and QVMAG.
Stephen has recently been appointed Associate Lecturer in Graphics Media at UNSW Australia Art & Design and is currently working on a Master of Design (Research).
