Twisted Discourses: Titian’s Depictions of “Venus and Music” of His Late Creative Period

In his late creative period Titian created––partly in collaboration with his workshop––six remarkable and only slightly divergent canvases of Venus. These canvases are preserved today at the collections of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Gemäldegalerie der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin. In all of these depictions music plays a momentous role––as illustrated by the distinctive presence of musicians, musical instruments and musical objects and symbols. They give expression to Titian’s particular interest in music and the therewith associated challenges of visualising music. It seems that Titian’s canvases––as it will be explored––refer to the central intellectual discourses of his time and hence make a decisive contribution to them. All these discourses form an entwined and complex visual network in Titian’s depictions of Venus and music whose complexity is enforced––as will be discussed––by the rather enigmatic inconsistency of the formal disposition within all six instances.

Antonio Baldassarre is Professor and Head of Research and Development at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, School of Music, and is also appointed Guest Professor at the Facultad de Música of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and PhD Advisor at Boston University. He holds a PhD from the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and has held research and teaching positions as Research Fellow, Lecturer and Visiting Professor at the Research Center for Music Iconography, the universities of Basel and Zurich, the Faculty of Music of the University of Arts in Belgrade, and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He has extensively researched and published on topics of music history from those of the Renaissance to contemporary music, music iconography, visual culture, performing studies, music historiography and the social and cultural history of music.

Antonio Baldassarre is a Visiting Scholar at the Conservatorium of Music, School of Creative Arts, University of Tasmania.
