The Burra Charter: The Australia ICOMOS Charter for the Conservation of Places of Cultural Significance guides the conservation of Australia’s built environment. It was written and adopted by the Australian Chapter of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1979 and most recently updated in 2013. It is now widely recognised and has been influential internationally. Although it is not a legal document, it is typically used as a point of reference for the granting of approvals for works to heritage buildings in Australia. This lecture, part of a survey of Australian architectural history, discusses the philosophies and principles of the Burra Charter and explores their interpretation in contemporary Australian architecture.

About the Speaker:
Dr Stuart King is a Lecturer and Programme Director (Architecture) at the University of Tasmania's School of Architecture and Design. He teaches in design and history and theory, and researches in Australian architectural history, historiography and heritage. He is particularly interested in the nineteenth century and architecture in colonial settings, especially settler colonies.
