Sue Henderson’s work constructs landscapes that are both seen and felt, both vast and intimate. Re-visioning the Tasmanian landscape, Henderson draws on her perspective as a rock climber. Detailing the intersection of body and surface, these weathered, geological patterns suggest complex cartographies known as much by hand as by eye. Henderson’s installation practice creates spaces that not only convey her perspective on the landscape but also evoke its multiple temporalities: a memory of gathering with friends, the deep time of rocks and fossilised plants, the creeping cellular time of lichen and mould.

This retrospective exhibition gathers the range of Henderson’s work: from large-scale ink paintings to ephemeral installation work to repurposed domestic objects in her collaborative work as part of Art3. The exhibition recognises her distinctive practices and celebrates her contributions as artist, teacher, colleague, mentor. Dr Sue Henderson was the Head of Drawing and Painting at the School of Creative Arts (Inveresk), University of Tasmania from 2014 to 2016.
