Melonie Bayl-Smith is the Director of Sydney-based Bijl Architecture. Along with her studio team, Melonie exercises a purposeful and robust design approach, evidenced through built and speculative works that respond to memory, material and place.
With projects located across Sydney and NSW, Tasmania and regional Victoria, the practice work spans the residential, education, community and public sectors, with many of Bijl Architecture’s completed projects being widely published and receiving significant industry recognition.
Over the past 15 years, Melonie has established herself as a respected voice in and for the profession, her numerous contributions most recently being recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects with the awarding of the 2018 Paula Whitman Leadership in Gender Equity Prize.
An Adjunct Professor at UTS School of Architecture, Melonie teaches in the design studio and in professional practice. With an active research interest focused on the intersection of architectural education, practice and the profession, Melonie has a particular interest in the relevance of the architect and the sticky issues surrounding the now and the future of the broader profession.
