Finland’s top innovators in reshaping the future of maths education stop off in Tasmania as part of a world tour. Math Hunger aims to develop inspiring mathematics learning based on the latest research. The workshop is applicable to all educational levels and will showcase techniques never seen before. It offers tools to develop maths teaching, not only to enhance learning outcomes, but to make learning interesting and fun.
The workshop will outline the new Finnish curriculum, the presenters’ own research and include an audience activity.
About the presenters

Dr Laura Tuohilampi. Laura is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at the University of Helsinki. Her research interests address engagement and the social and contextual aspects of learning. Her book Math Hunger argues people would be hungry to learn mathematics if it was served up in an engaging way. The book has been released in Finland and an international version is in production.

Juuso Nieminen. Juuso is a doctoral student in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Helsinki. His research concerns mathematics and special education. Juuso has built on his expertise in learning disabilities, expanding into the field of mathematics, but also into digital learning resources as a way to support struggling students. In 2019 Juuso will publish a book on assessment culture with Aki Luostarinen.
