The 3rd year students from the UTAS’ School of Creative Arts are excited to announce their graduation production of The Torrents.  Guest directed by multi-award winning writer, director, teacher and artistic director Chris Thompson from Melbourne.

The Torrents is a forgotten classic written by Australian Playwright, Oriel Gray. In 1955 it was the co-winner, with Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, of the Playwrights’ Advisory Board’s award for Best Play. The Torrents is underappreciated and was perhaps ahead of its time.

This comedy-drama production is set in the newsroom of a regional newspaper, The Koolgalla Argus in 1898. Two narratives are present throughout the production which explore themes such as media chauvinism, environmental destruction, corrupt powers and womens rights that are chillingly still relevant today.
